Why Craft is Important

Is now a bad time to start a furniture company, or any company that makes quality craft goods? It's a question people wonder when I tell them I own a local furniture company. Or they say “Wow, that's cool, but that must be hard”. And yes, it is hard. But I also think it may be a good time to be in this business.

People are so inundated by mass consumerism. Big box stores and online retail giants offer endless options for furniture and home goods, a particularly saturated market. Consumers can easily get something which is cheaper and comes quicker than what we here at Sidetracked Workshop can offer as a local furniture company. It’s not even close.

Don’t get me wrong, I like stuff, and I understand that I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to even consider spending my money on something non-essential like locally made wood furniture.

I love things, objects, and design, but I don’t consume a whole lot. I have just a few pairs of quality pants I wear until they are threadbare. I’m thrifty, I’m stingy, but I also spend a long time scouring vintage malls and craigslist for old furniture that speaks to me. I’ll spend money or time on acquiring the ‘right’ thing, and then I’ll hold onto it. Luckily I also have the skillset to build and craft my own furniture and spaces by investing my own time and using quality materials (Ok, I do hoard materials… that is my vice).

But I think consumers are pretty tired of the junk. Convenience and price go a long way, but it comes at the expense of quality, artistry, and individuality. I’ve found that since starting this business there are tons of people who want to find better alternatives.

I get a lot of emails that start with something like: “I’ve been looking for furniture like this for a long time and I’m so glad I came across your pieces”

With the oversaturation of cheap home goods, creating craft furniture actually seems to stand out in the marketplace by embodying values that are increasingly rare: durability, thoughtful design, and a connection with the maker. I think the human element is a big part of it, as consumers we are completely detached from the maker of most of the things in our lives, it's a totally anonymous transaction.

Craft furniture reintroduces the human element into the equation. Buying directly from a maker, or even knowing the story behind a piece, creates a sense of connection and accountability. It humanizes the transaction and fosters respect—for the object, the maker, and for the customer.

I’ve honestly been blown away by how kind and thoughtful our customers are, particularly compared to past customer facing jobs I’ve had in my life. We work together to build something special. They give us the time and space to express our craft, and grace when we make mistakes. In return we work hard and genuinely put thought and care into each piece that goes out the door. This connection can lead to greater care and pride in ownership.I hope, and believe, that these interactions are mutually refreshing.

When people buy better, they begin to value their possessions differently. They take better care of them, form emotional connections, and their furniture becomes part of a longer narrative—one that spans years, perhaps even generations.

Craft furniture is important not just for its beauty, but for what it represents: a commitment to quality, artistry, individuality, and human connection. It reminds us that our possessions can carry stories, bring joy into our homes, and can last. In a world increasingly defined by speed and uniformity, I’m proud that the pieces we make here at Sidetracked Workshop celebrate quality and uniqueness. And so yes, I DO think this is a good time to believe in, support, and to make quality craft products.
